In late July 2026, Oak Lawn and Alsip changed the security options for local businesses. Both villages voted to legalize security foggers. These systems flood a room with dense fog the moment a break-in starts. For owners who have watched smash-and-grab crews hit their gaming terminals, that vote matters.

Why Oak Lawn and Alsip legalized security foggers

The decision followed a run of burglaries at bars and restaurants with video gaming terminals. Crews were in and out in minutes, wearing masks and gloves. So cameras alone rarely led to an arrest. As a result, both boards wanted a tool that stops a theft in progress, not one that only records it. Oak Lawn approved the change on July 28. The mayor said the goal was to greatly discourage the break-ins.

What the new rules require

Legalizing the technology is only half of the story. Each village also set rules for how a system is installed and marked. That way, first responders know what they are walking into.

• Oak Lawn: a permit through the Building Department and a warning sign at the entrance. The sign must state, in capital letters, that a fogging system may activate after hours.
• Alsip: tighter fire-department rules. These include an orange strobe on each side of the building and a village shut-off key. The strobe separates fog from smoke, and the key allows shut-off during a power failure.

Alsip had not issued any permits as of mid-August. So owners there should confirm the current rules before they buy.

Why businesses are turning to fog

Speed is the whole point. A crew plans to be inside for two or three minutes. They cannot work in a room where they cannot see their hands. Because the fog blocks vision at once, the reward disappears. Most intruders then leave with nothing. Insurers have noticed too, and many treat fog as a deterrent when they set premiums.
