How a Fog Alarm Works, From Trigger to Full Coverage

Plenty of owners hear the pitch and still wonder what happens inside the box. A fog alarm is not a smoke machine on a timer. Instead, it is a controlled device with trigger logic, supervised inputs and a sealed cartridge, and every part has a job. Below we walk through the chain from the first motion signal to a room nobody can see across.

What a fog alarm is

Think of it as the response half of your security stack. Detection tells you something happened, while this hardware does something about it.

The unit sits on the ceiling or wall and stays quiet until an intrusion is confirmed. Then it releases a dense white cloud that fills the room within seconds.

Because the cloud is thick rather than wispy, it does not simply hang near the ceiling. It fills the space from floor to ceiling, so nobody can duck under it.

Step one: the trigger chain

Nothing fires by accident. A signal has to arrive from a source the system trusts, and the board checks it before acting.

Three common sources exist. First, a dual-element PIR motion sensor covers 360 degrees up to about five metres. Second, your alarm panel can pass a verified intrusion straight through. Third, staff or a monitoring centre can fire it manually with a panic input.

The PIR uses two-way temperature compensation, so warm summer air and cold winter mornings do not shift its sensitivity. Consequently, false activations stay rare.

Step two: the control board decides

At the centre sits a custom board built around an Arm Cortex-M0+ running at 64 MHz. Its main task is discipline, not speed for its own sake.

The board reads inputs, checks arm state and confirms the signal before releasing anything. Meanwhile, it supervises tamper, service and trouble conditions and reports faults back to the panel.

DIP switches set the behaviour on site. As a result, one installer can configure a small back office and a large showroom from the same hardware.

Four colours tell you the state at a glance:

  • Green: the unit has power
  • Blue: armed and ready
  • Red: an activation signal has arrived
  • Amber: service required

Staff should learn these four before opening day. Afterwards, a quick glance during closing replaces a full walk-through.

Step three: inside the cartridge

This part surprises people most. The cartridge holds compressed sugarcane particles, pressed into sealed biscuits at the factory.

A 5V DC tungsten filament heats those biscuits on command. Since the process is non-pyrotechnic, there is no charge, no bang and no flame. The engineered head combines heat and pressure, and it cools quickly once the cycle ends.

That design matters for approvals and for peace of mind. In short, a fog alarm built this way behaves like a controlled appliance rather than a firework.

Step four: fog alarm coverage in seconds

One unit fills roughly 3,500 cubic feet in about 12 seconds. For context, that covers a typical back office almost instantly.

The system also supports repeat cycles, which the manufacturer calls Immediate Repeatable Multiple Deployment. In practice, a returning intruder meets the same wall of white a second time.

Is a fog alarm safe around people and stock?

Safety questions come up in every quote, and rightly so. The fog is non-toxic, non-corrosive and residue-free when the system is sized correctly.

Nothing greasy settles on inventory. Similarly, electronics, textiles and glass come through untouched, so you avoid the cleanup that a chemical deterrent would cause.

Staff should still leave the area during a deployment, simply because they cannot see. For that reason, exit routes form part of every commissioning plan.

Power, backup and outages

The platform runs on 12V DC low voltage and draws from your alarm panel. A backup battery then keeps it live through a power cut.

Thieves who cut the mains do not disarm the unit. On the contrary, they walk into a system that is still armed and still watching.

Testing and upkeep

Maintenance is light, although it is not zero. Installers use dedicated test accessories to confirm trigger paths without discharging a cartridge.

Plan on an annual service visit. During that visit, the technician checks cartridge status, supervision faults, battery health and sensor alignment.

Replace a cartridge after any real deployment. Otherwise, the unit reports amber and your fog alarm sits unprotected without anyone noticing.

How installers price a deployment

Volume drives most of the cost, followed by zone count and cartridge quantity. Consequently, two shops of the same floor area can land at different numbers once ceiling height enters the maths.
